Have fun wearing wacky hair as we celebrate Read Across America Day.
In Chapter 23 of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, the setting suddenly shifts. Edward seems to wake up in a dreamlike place filled with the people who have loved him — and those he has loved in return.
One detail may feel especially important (and confusing): Sarah Ruth is not there. Instead, she has become a constellation in the night sky. Edward longs to join her… but chooses to remain.
This chapter happens right after a very dramatic moment at the diner, and its sudden, dreamlike quality can leave readers wondering: What just happened?

Here are some questions to help guide your family conversation tonight:
📖 Understanding the Setting Change
How do you know this chapter feels different from the others?
Do you think Edward is dreaming? Imagining? Experiencing something symbolic? What makes you think that?
Why do you think the author chose to pause the action for this moment?
🌟 About Sarah Ruth & the Constellation
Why might Sarah Ruth be described as a constellation instead of standing with the others?
What do stars sometimes symbolize in stories?
Why does Edward want to join her? Why does he decide to stay?
❤️ Connecting as a Family
This chapter gently touches on themes of love, loss, and what may come after life. Families have many different beliefs and ways of understanding these ideas.
What does our family believe about what happens after someone dies?
How do we keep the memory of someone alive in our hearts?
Why is it important that Edward chooses to keep living and loving?
This chapter gives us space to reflect on hope, memory, and the power of choosing love — even after loss.
We would love to hear how your family interpreted this powerful moment. Share your thoughts below. 💜🐾📚
In Chapters 20 & 21 of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Edward’s journey takes him to Memphis — and once again, his world changes in ways he never expected. New people. New challenges. New lessons.
This part of the story shows us how love and loss continue to shape Edward’s heart.

Today our amazing 4th graders took spelling to the next level — by using their BODIES to spell their words! In small groups, students worked together to twist, stretch, bend, and problem-solve their way through each word. Talk about teamwork and creativity!
Not only were they practicing spelling patterns, but they were also:
✨ Communicating
✨ Collaborating
✨ Thinking critically
✨ Laughing A LOT
Learning doesn’t always happen at a desk — sometimes it happens on the floor, upside down, and in the shape of a vowel! 😉
We are so proud of our Panthers for working together and cheering each other on. 💜🐾

Perrine Panther Families,
In chapters 15 and 16 of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Edward’s journey takes a powerful turn. He is hung in a garden as a scarecrow—still watching the world, but unable to move or be held. These chapters invite us to think about patience, change, and what it means to see beauty even in difficult circumstances.
As you read together, here are some family discussion questions:
🌱 Why do you think Edward is placed in the garden? How might he be feeling?
🌱 What do the people in the garden think Edward is? How does that differ from who he really is?
🌱 How does being still and watching the world change help Edward understand life?
🌱 Have you ever felt stuck or unnoticed? What helped you during that time?
🌱 What does this part of the story teach us about kindness and perspective?
Reading together is a wonderful way to build understanding and connection. We’d love to hear your thoughts—share a comment or picture of your family reading!

Edward’s journey takes a big turn in Chapters 12–14 of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. (Links to our read aloud videos are at the bottom of the post.) After time in the dump, Edward finds himself traveling the road with Bull and Lucy. Life looks very different than it once did—but these chapters show us powerful lessons about kindness, sacrifice, and what it truly means to care for someone.
As you read together, take a few moments to talk as a family using these discussion questions:
🐰 Comprehension & Reflection Questions:
How is Edward’s life with Bull and Lucy different from his life before?
How does Bull show kindness in his own way?
What does Edward begin to understand about love during this time?
❤️ Family Connection Questions:
Lucy made sacrifices for someone she loved. Have you ever made a sacrifice for someone? Has someone done that for you?
What does it mean to truly care about someone?
Why do you think love can sometimes feel painful?
What are small ways we can show love to each other this week?
These chapters remind us that even in hard times, love has the power to change us.

• Do you notice any new thoughts or feelings that Edward has that he didn’t have earlier in the story?
